TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida A & M head coach Alex Wood resigned from his post Monday.
His resignation follows a 29-24 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday and a state lawmaker's call for his immediate firing. FAMU lost a 14-point fourth-quarter lead against Bethune-Cookman.
Immediately after that loss, State Rep. Ramon Alexander, a FAMU graduate, tweeted that "Wood MUST be fired immediately for the fake punt call in the 4th Quarter of the Florida Classic ... and I mean immediately."
FAMU Athletics Director Milton Overton announced Wood's resignation Monday morning.
"Wood has served FAMU Athletics with honor as he worked to help rebuild the Rattler football program during the past three seasons," Overton said in a news release. "We thank him for his dedication and service."
Wood, whose 3-year contract ends in December, compiled an 8-25 record at FAMU.
Offensive line coach Edwin Pata, a two-time FAMU alumnus and former FSU football player, will become the interim head football coach.
FAMU's search for a new head football coach will be under the leadership of the interim director of athletics, John Eason.
