TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Florida A&M University fans cheered on their beloved Rattlers as they entered Bragg stadium, letting the team know they're behind them this game and all season.

"Our school is all about having Rattler pride. It goes way back and we also want to make sure our team is hyped up for the first game for the season," said Morgan Martin, a FAMU student.

Fans were out in full force to kick-off the 2018 season, hoping a new coach will bring new life to the program.

"I've been a Rattler all my life so we're just ready to see what the new season brings. But if the season is bad we're still going to be Rattlers," said Jordan Byrd.

Fans say they're ready for kick-off and they support their rattlers all the way. Many tailgating on Saturday have memories at FAMU that go back decades.

"My father actually was on the 1957 undefeated team under Jake Gaither, the coach. And he and his team members are being honored and recognized at the half-time show," said Wendy Johnson, a FAMU Alumni.

And with a new head coach, Willie Simmons, stepping in, fans say it's a new era of FAMU football and they're ready for it to be a great one.

"We're excited to see what he has to bring to the Rattlers. We're excited about a new season, a winning season," said Martin.

Fans say it's been seven years since their beloved Rattlers won a national championship.

They're hoping this is the year to break that streak and bring home the title.
