TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A community is in mourning, as Florida A&M university has lost one of its students after a weekend crash in Suwannee County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 19-year-old sophomore Emojah Mullings died from her injuries Monday afternoon. The car she was traveling in, went off the interstate and overturned, leaving her in critical condition.
The community is heartbroken. An aspiring broadcast journalist wasn't in class this morning. Instead, grief counselors were there to help students cope with the loss of a friend and classmate.
News of what happened started swirling around social media Monday, though nothing was officially confirmed until this afternoon.
Still, Emojah's friends have posted online about the type of person she was. We spoke to one of her classmates, who is on the e-board of the Caribbean Students Association that Emojah was a part of.
They were supposed to be in class together Tuesday. She said Emojah was full of energy and had a passion for life.
"Emojah was a fun-loving person. Honestly, I could say that she was like the life of the party -- whether it was at a general body meeting or we actually had little get-togethers as an organization," said Giselle Thomas, a classmate. "Whenever she would walk into the room, she would honestly light it up. Her spirit was so joyful."
The driver of the car that crashed was also a FAMU student with the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication. She had minor injuries.
The journalism school's interim dean reflected on Emojah's life as well.
In a statement, Dean Dhyana Ziegler said, "Ms. Mullings was a very engaged student and very full of life. She was active in the student body in several organizations and displayed promise for success in the journalism industry."
The university will continue offering grief counseling to students and staff and there will be a vigil Friday night at the Eternal Flame to remember Emojah.
