TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- In an early morning emergency meeting the Florida A&M University Board of Trustees met to vote on whether or not to terminate the employment of Dr. Elmira Mangum.
The meeting lasted more than 3 hours as members discussed two different motions to terminate Dr. Mangum. Both motions failed.
The meeting was called to discuss financial irregularities involving University President Elmira Mangum. As of 10:30 am Thursday the meeting is still ongoing.
According to the board's documents, Mangum is accused of approving more than $370,000 in renovations to the President's House. Something, which Mangum claims she did not approve.
Other documents, found in the board's agenda, claim some of Mangum's top hires may have received bonuses using money appropriated by the state legislature, which is against the law.
She says she has not properly misused funds when giving bonuses to administrators. Mangum claims the bonuses were authorized by her office, and there was an error in a recent bonus, but it was later discovered and corrected.
Mangum says she's saddened by her relationship with the board of trustees: "I write this response as a last-ditch effort to truly reset and work with this board on actually moving FAMU forward. I have in good faith tried my hardest to increase communication and to be open and transparent."
