TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Student housing at Florida A&M University is set to get a face-lift.

The University's Board of Trustees approved the first phase of a multi-million dollar project to provide better options on campus.

FAMU plans to add residence halls at the current site of a parking lot on the southwest corner of MLK Junior Boulevard and Osceola Street.

The facilities will replace 500 beds and add 200 more.

The university also has plans to demolish four dorms that are part of what's called the "Pentaplex." The vision for that space could include green space or potential parking.

Officials say the upgrade to on-campus housing is necessary.

"Our housing inventory is in pretty old buildings, and we want to make sure that we offer our students state-of-the-art facilities just like other universities in the country offer," said Sameer Kapileshwari, FAMU Associate Vice President of Facilities. "So, that's basically what we are trying to do over here."

The university is looking into different financing options to fund the project. The goal is to complete this first phase by the end of 2020.
