PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) - The family of a black man who was fatally shot by a South Florida police officer has hired prominent civil rights attorneys.
Attorney Daryl Parks and Benjamin Crump confirmed Tuesday that they had been retained by the family of 31-year-old Corey Jones.
Friends say Jones, a drummer, experienced car trouble early Sunday morning on the way home from his bands' gig.
Palm Beach Gardens Officer Nouman Raja spotted Jones' car near Interstate 95 and pulled up wearing plain clothes in an unmarked car. Police say Jones was armed, and a confrontation ended with Raja shooting Jones.
Parks and Crump have previously worked with the families of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Michael Brown.
Palm Beach Gardens Police Chief Stephen Stepp released few details during news conference Tuesday evening, saying the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office was conducting an independent investigation.
