TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- A Tallahassee man is slowly recovering after being hit by a car near Cascades Park two weeks ago.

Zach Glover was seriously injured on March 14 while walking to Cascades Park.

"I think I'm doing okay, not 100 percent, but I'm trying to get there," he said.

"He has short-term and long-term memory loss," said his mother Danielle Francis, "but we're hoping with rehabilitation that they said it could take up to a year."

Glover spent five days in the ICU, had four CT scans -- a total of fourteen days at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

"It was just overwhelming, because he'd been through so much as an infant that we just thought we were past that," his mother said.

Glover was born several months premature and has a developmental disability, but his mom and stepdad say he's been a fighter all his life.

"We're looking forward to him just being independent," said Francis.

"I like to go to Cascades to take a walk and relax," Glover said.

On the day of the accident, he was walking down Franklin Boulevard on his way to Cascades Park. He started crossing Pensacola Street, with the crosswalk signal indicating it was clear to proceed -- but a vehicle making a left turn onto Pensacola hit Glover as he walked. The driver told police she never saw Glover, who remembers very little about the incident.

"Thankfully, I'm still alive, but to be honest, I really wish that never happened," he said.

His family says his recovery has been remarkable, but a recent discovery has set them back.

"When we started looking for a rehabilitation center, they came back and unfortunately had to give us the news that he has no coverage," said David Francis, Zach's stepfather.

Glover had been dropped from his insurance plan without his family's knowledge, forcing them to scramble for help.

"It is a convoluted and hard system to navigate through," his stepfather said.

But despite the healthcare hurdle, Glover and his family are grateful he's on the mend.

The family found out Tuesday that Glover's progress so far will allow him to come home earlier than expected and bypass weeks of rehab, which would cost the family several thousand dollars.

Glover has been receiving dozens of letters wishing him well. The family encourages the community to continue sending him mail at the following address: 715 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308.

The family has also been receiving funds from the community to help pay for Glover's medical expenses.
