MIAMI (AP) - A former University of Miami finance official has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for tax evasion in a $3.2 million embezzlement scheme.
Federal prosecutors said Tuesday in a news release that 58-year-old Kimberly Jean Miller was sentenced after previously pleaded guilty to four counts of tax evasion. She was finance director from 2002 to 2012 at Miami's Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
Court documents show Miller falsified invoices from a school vendor called International Assets so its payment checks could be deposited into a business bank account for Intercontinental Oceans, a company she opened in 1993. Miller admitted falsifying tax returns between 2008 and 2011.
In addition to the prison time, Miller owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $329,000 in back taxes.
