Event at Capitol fighting growing trend of suicide

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- State health officials say suicide is becoming some prevalent it should now be considered a public health concern.

Statistics by the Florida Department of Health show 2,900 reported suicides recorded in Florida in 2012. That's twice the number of homicides.

Considered the eighth largest cause of death among Floridians, members of the Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition will be at the Capitol Thursday to raise awareness during the 12th annual Suicide Prevention Day. Organizers say suicide cuts across every socio-economic, racial and ethnic background.

Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition and Florida Department of Children and Families are hosting the 12th Annual Suicide Prevention Day at the Florida Capitol on Thursday. This is an effort to decrease the number of suicides.

Organizers say it's important to educate people about the warning signs of depression and potential for suicide in an effort to decrease the number of suicides.
