TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Most of the injured from Tuesday’s massive pileup on Interstate 10 are out of the hospital.

11 of the 12 patients taken to two Tallahassee Memorial Hospital emergency centers have been discharged.

The 12th patient is still in the hospital in critical condition.

In a statement TMH said:

We received a total of 12 patients at the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Bixler Trauma & Emergency Center and Emergency Center - Northeast. As of today at 4:30 pm, all patients have been discharged, except for one who remains in critical condition.

FHP says it’s a man who was thrown from his motorcycle trying to avoid the pileup.

If you were anywhere near I-10 Tuesday, you may have been impacted by this scene.

State troopers said at least 45 vehicles were part of the pileup.

The highway was backed up for miles for hours, as first responders tried to get to those who were hurt and crews worked to clear the road, right in the middle of the evening rush.

Investigators say the pileup started after a semi jack-knifed trying to get around another car.

Troopers said Tuesday night that charges are pending. We reached out this evening to see if there’s an update. We’re still waiting to hear back.

We also called Capital Regional Medical Center to see if anyone was taken there. The hospital said it didn’t receive any patients from the pileup.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Florida Highway Patrol gave an update overnight about a massive crash involving dozens of vehicles along a stretch of I-10.

Eight people were hurt in the pile-up that caused gridlock in the westbound lanes for hours Tuesday night between the Monroe Street and Thomasville Road exits.

That's where WTXL's Jada Williams was live Wednesday morning, where authorities have re-opened the lanes in time for the morning commute.

Tuesday, I-10 was closed for more than five hours, and now the identity of one man sent to the hospital in critical condition due to that crash has been revealed.

FHP is reporting that Duane Allen Washington, 40, of Quincy was taken to Tallahassee Memorial in critical condition.

There were 18 crashes involving 45 cars.

A preliminary investigation reveals that it all started when a semi-truck tried to avoid a slow moving car on the highway. As a result, a second semi-truck tried to avoid the other semi, but ended up jackknifing and blocking all lanes of traffic.

That blockage caused at least 18 crashes. Troopers report heavy rain in the area also contributed to the crashes.

Tallahassee Memorial Hospital is reporting 12 victims.

  • Bixler Trauma & Emergency center has received four patients; three in fair condition, one in critical condition.
  • Emergency center NE has received eight patients; five in good condition, three in fair condition.

We've also learned that one of the victims involved was a pregnant woman.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash. Charges are pending.

I-10 WB cleared after multiple crashes, motorcyclist critically injured

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - WTXL is learning more about how a motorcyclist from Quincy was critically injured in the I-10 westbound multiple crashes Tuesday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that Duane Allen Washington, who was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, was traveling westbound on I-10's inside lane.

A Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Steven Patrick Sheridan, of Havana, was traveling on I-10 westbound in front of the motorcyclist.

The pickup swerved onto the paved safety apron and came to a stop due to several crashes occurring ahead in an attempt to avoid crashing.

Washington also swerved to avoid a collision but was unable to stop the motorcycle and it collided into the rear of the pickup truck, ejecting Sheridan onto the grass median.
