TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Getting the younger generation registered to vote was the goal on college campuses in the Capital City Tuesday.

Statistics show younger voters historically haven't shown up to the polls, especially during midterm elections. And in 2014, less than a quarter of eligible Millennials said they voted, according to Pew research.

That's one reason organizers with the Leon County Supervisor of Elections say they wanted to encourage college students to register to vote. Organizers say they've gotten at least 100 new applications from students today.

And those WTXL spoke to say they're ready to make their voices heard in the polls.

"I think more politicians will take more of a aim towards targeting our demographic, our younger demographic, and getting more politicians to focus on college and what's going on in our college environment," said Jordan Dixon, a FAMU student,

Emery Lowden, an FSU student, said "If we all showed up we could really shift the polls and I think it's really important that this generation has a completely different mindset."

According to the U.S. Elections Project, over the last 100 years, only 4 in 10 voters showed up for midterm elections. And the number is even lower when it comes to voters ages 18 to 24.
