ELDORADO, GA (WALB) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed one person was found dead after a shooting in Tift County Monday afternoon.

The GBI has identified the victim as Akhtar Perveez, 55.

According to the GBI, Perveez was found dead inside the store after what appears to be a robbery at the Eldorado Food Mart at US 41 South and Omega-Eldorado Road.

WALB spoke with one woman on the scene who said her father works at the store with the owner.

She did not want to be identified but said the store owner was one of the kindest souls you'll ever meet.

"He was genuinely loved and respected by every single person who knew him, who was an acquaintance with him, who frequented the store on a daily basis, or who just knew him in passing," the woman explained. "He exuded a genuine light."

A Tift County Sheriff's Office deputy told WALB there was a shooting at the convenience store.

The Tift County Sheriff's Office requested the help of the GBI just before 3:30 p.m.

The GBI said multiple calls were made to Tift County 911, reporting suspicious activity in and around the store earlier in the day.

Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough said the sheriff's office has turned the case over to the GBI.

Anyone with any information on this case is urged to call the GBI at (229) 777-2080 or the Tift County Sheriff's Office at (229) 388-6021.
