TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In honor of National Service Recognition Day, one local center is highlighting their volunteers who logged more than 200,000 hours last year.

WTXL's Jada Williams has details on how those volunteers are making waves with their peers.

Elder Care is hosting a National Service Recognition Day Open House to recognize the 550 volunteers who contributed to the 220,000 volunteer hours logged.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum will give a proclamation at the Open House recognizing the importance of National Service.

And of course, there will be a celebration for the contribution the volunteers have made.

Many of the volunteers are low-income seniors and they receive a stipend for their time spent volunteering.

Any and everyone is invited to come out to celebrate these volunteers and also find out how to become a volunteer.

That's all happening at the Elder Care Volunteer Center on West Tennessee Street today, Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

What types of volunteers opportunities does Elder Care offer?

There's the Foster Grandparent Program, the Senior Companion Program and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program.

They're all geared to address critical issues among seniors.
