TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The mother of a Tallahassee teen shot and killed by police is breaking her silence, following her family's settlement with the City of Tallahassee over her son's death.
Duane Strong was shot and killed by a Tallahassee police officer in June 2014.
Police say they responded to the former Cheeks nightclub on West Tennessee Street to reports of a shooting.
According to police, Strong was trying to drive out of the parking lot, when an officer told him to stop.
They say the 18-year-old sped towards the officer, who fired his weapon, in fear for his life.
The City of Tallahassee agreed to pay Strong's family $325,000 earlier this month.
Saturday evening, family and friends of Strong gathered at the Walker Ford Community Center for the 2nd annual "Wane Day" event.
His family says the settlement does not bring him back, but it provided the closure they needed.
"Tomorrow (Saturday) actually marks the second year Duane was tragically killed by the Tallahassee Police Department, so we're here celebrating 'Duane day,'" said his mother Ayounna McClinton. "We want to keep Duane alive through us. Stay positive."
The event was in collaboration with the "Living Through Lost Lives" organization, which was created in Strong's honor to help families in similar situations.
