TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tuesday was Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day at the Florida Capitol.

The event is hosted by The Arc of Florida and the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. Dozens gathered to talk about issues that affect people with disabilities and their families.

Lawmakers and advocates talked about the need to maintain funding for services that help support Floridians with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"I want to be one of the first people with disabilities to run for office just so I can represent people who don't normally always have a voice," said Sarah Goldman, a developmental disabilities advocate and winner of the 8th annual Idelio Valdes Leadership and Advocacy Award. "The waiting list, for example, for an agency for a persons with disabilities... There's 20,000 people right now on the waiting list, waiting to have services. I think that is a priority that needs to be taking place in the legislature."

Another issue discussed at the event: making sure all working people with disabilities are paid a fair wage.
