TERRELL CO., GA (WALB) - Dozens of homes around the Tyson Foods chicken plant on Industrial Park Blvd have been evacuated after a chemical fire at the plant began around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Terrell County EMA Director Billy McClung said around 40 homes have been evacuated in the area of Old Mill Road and the intersection of Highway 32.

First responders have gone door to door in outlying areas to inform residents to be on standby.

McClung said the evacuations are due to ammonia leaks.

The fire is mostly contained but crews are battling hot spots and will be on scene throughout the day.

Multiple fire crews from Terrell, Lee and Dougherty counties responded.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Terrell County School System and Terrell Academy have announced that schools will be closed.

All students, faculty and staff do not need to report to school Thursday.

On Thursday, the Terrell County School System will determine if classes will resume Friday.
