TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The day after the Fourth of July is one of the busiest for local animal shelters as run away dogs seek refuge at their front doors.

The Tallahassee Animal Shelter experiences overcrowding the most this time of year.

Thursday afternoon, 15 dogs showed up at their shelter, most of them as a result of being scared off by fireworks.

As this becomes an increasing problem, employees are raising awareness about keeping your dogs safe and calm during fireworks.

"Your going to deal with dogs that have storm phobia and sometimes when the fireworks go off they don't really understand where that's coming from, so they just get kind of freaked out and take off," said Grayson Walters with the Tallahassee Animal Shelter. "You need to know your pet, so if you know your pet has a tendency to be scared pay attention to that."

Tallahassee Animal Shelter advises people to file a found report if you find any lost animals.

You can also checkout their monthly microchip clinic, this will make it easier to help track down your missing animal if they are to run away.
