TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tallahassee animal hospital has confirmed a case of dog flu.
On Wednesday, the Animal Hospital and Pet Resort at Southwood posted an alert on their Facebook page saying that they will now take extra precautions.
Dog flu is a very contagious virus with nearly 100% of dogs who are exposed becoming infected.
Symptoms Include:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Nasal Discharge
- Extreme Lethargy
- Decreased Appetite
- Fever
The virus can be transmitted both through contact with infected canines and contact of contaminated environments.
The Animal Hospital and Pet Resort at Southwood is also hosting a canine influenza vaccine clinic on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There you can get your dog a physical exam and a vaccine for the flu.
If your pet is exposed, call your veterinarian's office. If symptoms are not severe your dog may not need to see a vet; they may just recommend isolation. If treatment is needed your veterinarian will tailor a treatment plan for your dog’s condition.
