TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Running a 5K is no easy feat, so imagine running one everyday for 50 days.
That's what Dr. Adel Korkor has been doing to raise money for mental health resources across the country.
Tallahassee is the 31st stop on Dr. Korkor's journey to run a 5K race in all 50 states in 50 days. It's all to raise money for something that's personal to him: Mental health.
Dr. Korkor is a retired kidney specialist who started his foundation two years ago and decided it to focus on mental health.
He says there's a negative stigma associated with people having and getting proper help for mental health issues.
Through this awareness raising campaign, he hopes to break that stigma and raise money for affordable, comprehensive mental health resources.
"I personally suffer from mental health issues. I had a panic attack 25 years ago. Since I've always been active and a runner, I intensified my training," said Dr. Korkor. "I started running more aggressively and competing. So running really helped me a great deal."
Dr. Korker says he decided to travel to all 50 states for this campaign because he wanted to hear stories from everyone.
Why 50 days? He says, time is of the essence. He wants to spread the message that anyone who has mental issues is not alone.
Dr. Korkor says we'll definitely see him again next year for the 5K 50-50.
