SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Suwannee County Sheriff's Office is investigating after false reports about a gun being confiscated from a high school lead to the discovery of threatening messages.

Deputies say a rumor began circulating Tuesday afternoon that a gun was

confiscated from Suwannee High School.

They say there is no substance to that rumor as no gun or weapon was confiscated.

"As rumors tend to expand as it makes its way through social media," deputies wrote on Facebook, "other messages of threats have emerged from this original rumor of a gun being confiscated."

SCSO and the Suwannee County School District, with an abundance of caution and concern, are following up on each reported piece of information, whether received through a phone call or through discovery on social media.

They say they are actively working to trace down and investigate the source of each report.

However, they say there has been no active credible threat identified.

Due to the concerns expressed by students and parents over this rumor, the SCSO will increase their level of presence at our schools to help ease concerns for school safety.

If you have any questions regarding the safety of our students or any information regarding threats of violence at our schools, please contact the Suwannee County Sheriff's Office at 386-362-2222 immediately, you may remain anonymous.
