TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- New data released by the Florida Department of Health shows that youth in Florida are smoking less.
According to the data, only 4.3% of Florida's youth between ages 11 and 17 are current cigarette smokers.
They say that's a 59% decrease since the state launched a tobacco free Florida program in 2007.
The data also shows that the cigarette smoking rate among high school students was lower than the national average of 12 point 7 percent in 2013 and that the rate of middle schoolers who reported smoking at least once in the past 30 days has decreased by 65% since 2006.
