DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Florida A&M University professor who had been named as Delaware State University's new provost has backed out of accepting his new position.
Former Florida A&M President James Ammons announced Sunday that he will remain as a faculty member in Tallahassee.
Ammons had been named DSU's new provost in May after being chosen to lead the academic agenda at Delaware's only historically black university.
DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes tells the News Journal of Wilmington (http://delonline.us/29yzKZk) that he doesn't know why Ammons changed his mind. Ammons did not immediately respond to the newspaper's request for comment.
Holmes says DSU will conduct a national search to find a new replacement for Alton Thompson. Thompson left the university in March, shortly after the university announced it was cutting 23 of its low-enrollment programs.
