Decatur County offering more incentives for bus drivers

Decatur County offering more incentives for bus drivers

DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - School bus drivers are in short supply across much of south Georgia, but Decatur County is doing what they can to bring in more drivers.

Starting this month, the school district is implementing an attendance incentive for bus drivers.

Drivers who don't miss a day during a semester or those who don't miss a limited number of routes in a 60-day period will be able to earn a bonus.

This will allow drivers to make up to $80 a day rather than the average of $50 to $60 a day.

"It's hard to recruit drivers because it's a 4 hour job. When the economy is good, there's a lot of other jobs out there that can pay. Of course, not everybody's cut out to drive kids," said Tim Cochran, Superintendent of Decatur County Schools. "It's just the nature of the economy we're in, the world we're in. We knew we had to increase the money side to attract more people."

A full staff consists of 56 bus drivers and several substitutes.

Those interested in driving for Decatur County Schools should contact the transportation department.
