Decatur County makes changes to EMS shifts

Posted

BAINBRIDGE, Ga.-- Decatur County leaders are hoping to save money by changing ambulance schedules.

According to Decatur County Administrator Gary Breedlove, the county used to have three ambulances running on 24 hour shifts. On September 1, that schedule changed to only two ambulances on 24 hour shifts and one on just a 16 hour shift.

This leaves out the times between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., when Breedlove says the change will help reduce budget deficits within the county.

"Emergency medical services is basically not designed to pay for itself," said Breedlove, "because you want to respond to any citizen's call for emergency services, you have to basically."

The county is also considering privatizing their EMS. They plan to take a closer look at the option as they look at the results of the schedule change.
