ATLANTA (AP) — Gov. Nathan Deal says the state should create a new agency to oversee probation and parole supervision, taking the work away from other state agencies.

During an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Deal said he will pitch the idea to lawmakers during his State of the State address on Wednesday.

He considers the new agency one way to ease the re-entry process for people leaving state prisons.

Deal says a separate agency will eliminate duplicate visits to one address by state supervisors and cut down on the number of people needed to oversee those on parole or probation.

Deal says he expects to have support for the idea from the Department of Corrections and the Department of Juvenile Justice. He hopes the state's parole board also will back it.
