Deal Appoints 3 to New Georgia Court of Appeals Slots

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed a superior court judge, a University System of Georgia official and a district attorney to three new judgeships on the state's Court of Appeals.

    

Deal announced the appointments on Thursday. Lawmakers approved the three new slots and added $1.5 million to the court's funding during the last legislative session.

    

Deal appointed:

    

- Amanda Mercier, a Superior Court judge in the Appalachian Judicial Circuit.

    

- Nels Peterson, vice chancellor for legal affairs and secretary to the Board of Regents who previously worked in the Georgia Department of Law and in the office of former Gov. Sonny Perdue.

    

- Brian Rickman, district attorney for Georgia's northeastern circuit.

    

Their terms begin Jan. 1 and continue through the end of 2018.
