DALLAS (RNN) - A man who shot a civilian and a Dallas Fire and Rescue EMT was found dead from a self-inflected gunshot wound.
A police robot found the suspect and a second man dead in a home as the scoured the neighborhood after a Dallas Fire-Rescue EMT was shot when responding to a call. Police have not identified the suspect or the other dead man.
Citing sources, the Dallas Morning News identified the shooter as Derick Lamont Brown, and said he had a lengthy criminal history.
The robot found the bodies about five hours after an incident that triggered a massive police response.
Dallas Fire and Rescue was responding to a call when they were fired upon. The paramedics were treating a shooting victim who was one of the suspected gunmen's neighbors, when the suspect walked up and opened fire. The paramedic was gravely wounded, and is in critical but stable condition after surgery at the Baylor Medical Center. Authorities have not identified him, but did say he is an 11-year veteran of the department.
The Dallas Morning News reported a bullet pierced an artery and he lost significant blood.
He is going to have to undergo "extensive medical treatment to get him back up to par," Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings said. A police officer was also injured, but suffered only minor injuries, the mayor said.
The neighbor who was shot is also in the ICU, dfw.cbs.local.com reported. The incident started as a dispute the neighbor and the suspect that turned violent, police said.
The shooting took place near the Dallas Fire-Rescue training facility.
Dallas Police Department Interim Chief David Pughes said the suspect used a high-powered rifle.
A police sergeant who was among the first to arrive on the scene ran into the hail of gunfire and got the wounded paramedic out. The sergeant took him to the hospital in his squad car. His actions saved the victim's life, Pughes said.
