SOPERTON, GA. (AP) - Three people are dead after a tanker truck smashed into the back of a car on Interstate 16.
The crash happened at about 3:35 a.m. Friday in Treutlen County, about 70 miles east of Macon. The Georgia State Patrol says a tanker truck traveling westbound struck a Toyota Scion in the rear. The impact sent both vehicles across the median and into the eastbound lanes of I-16.
State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson says all three people traveling in the Scion died in the crash. Their names were not immediately released.
The driver of the tanker truck, 56-year-old Christopher Hinson of Lyons, was taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
The crash remains under investigation. No decision has been made on whether to file charges.
