MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -A handwritten note on a receipt at a Memphis restaurant sparked a GoFundMe effort for a local server.
The note read, "We don't tip white ppl LOL"
Friends said the server, Nathan Bergeron, who received the mean note instead of a tip for his work, is a hard worker. They said he's saving money to try and get his own apartment. Nathan said this is the first time something like this has happened to him.
"You win some, you lose some. You get really good tips sometimes. Sometimes you get no tip," Bergeron said.
He has worked at a popular Mexican chain restaurant for over a year.
"I came back to the table and everything was gone and that's the receipt they had left had that written on top of it," he said.
Besides the 0 scribbled and marked through on the line, Bergeron said the mean message was the 'tip' the black couple gave him Saturday.
Bergeron said working in the restaurant industry you have to have a thick skin, but comments referring to his skin color are new to him. Although, he's not been immune to mean comments.
"Not so much like the race one--I've seen like get a real job or something like that," he said.
Bergeron brushed the message off, but it was his friend that posted the receipt on Facebook. Bergeron said the flood of comments was something he didn't expect. He said he didn't want to single out the couple for their actions.
"It's not to call out one person or individual, because it could happen both ways," he said.
However, he wants the couple to know that servers are human beings too. He hopes the couple will learn to treat others with respect regardless of their occupation or race.
"I'd say even if they came back in I'd still give them the exact same service I did last time," he said.
While saving his money, Nathan is living out of his car and taking on extra work as often as possible.
To help him get his own apartment, Nathan's friends set up a GoFundMe account.
