JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Parishioners are praying the third time's a charm for a massive crucifix that has twice fallen outside a Catholic church in Jacksonville.
The wooden crucifix rotted and toppled into the fountain at Christ the King Catholic Church in 2010.
On Sunday, church leaders unveiled a 17-foot tall cross all cast in bronze. Rev. Thanh Nguyen said the sculpture is designed to withstand a Category 5 hurricane
It took about a year to find the $290,000 for the project and complete construction.
The Florida Times-Union reports the second phase of the project will include monuments of the seven sacraments, an amphitheater, a fire pit and a tomb.
