TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- The number of murders in Leon County has now surpassed last year's total and is nearing a new high for a 5 year span.

From January 1 through August 5, 2014 there have now been 16 reported homicide cases in the Leon County/Tallahassee area.

Tallahassee Police Department: 14 homicide cases

Leon County Sheriff's Office: 2 homicide cases

On August 5, Leon County Sheriff's deputies were called out to their second homicide of the year at a home in the Killearn Lakes neighborhood. That is where deputies say 63 year-old Martha White stabbed her 7 year-old grandson, Mason Rhinehart, to death.

Among Tallahassee Police Department's 14 homicide cases includes the shooting death of Florida State University Professor Daniel Markel, which has gained national attention.

Investigators say they believe Markel was the intended target of a gunman who shot Markel one time in the head at Markel's Betton Hills home. There have been no arrests in that case.

Year to year 2014 could break a 5 year record, according to statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
