CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) - A Florida teenager has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing a homeless man.
As part of a plea deal with Lee County prosecutors, the 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder during a hearing, local media outlets attending the court appearance reported. He had been facing a first-degree murder charge and possible life sentence.
Authorities said the youth left his Cape Coral home one night in August 2014, walked to a homeless camp, stabbed 51-year-old Thomas J. Bergstrom multiple times with a bread knife and returned home. Police said there was no evidence the teen knew Bergstrom before the killing.
