MIAMI (AP) — The case involving a Miami couple accused of brutally beating and killing their adopted daughter is scheduled to back in court.
Jorge and Carmen Barahona have pleaded not guilty to murder charges after their daughter's body was found partially decomposed in the back of her father's truck along I-95 in West Palm Beach in 2011. Her brother survived, but was badly burned after being doused with a toxic chemical.
The state is seeking the death penalty.
Several trial dates have been pushed back as the case has dragged along. Jorge Barahona is also facing attempted murder charges against his son in West Palm Beach. A judge denied Barahona's request last fall to move that trial to Miami.
Meanwhile, the state agreed to a $5 million settlement with the boy. He received $1.25 million, but the rest was to come from the Legislature.
