TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The chair of the Leon County Commission has called on local and state governments to stop banking with Wells Fargo.
County Commissioner Bill Proctor said that Wells Fargo's recent nationwide scandal uncovered corruption and deception at the financial institution.
Wells Fargo is accused of mishandling funds at the corporate level and creating a program which encouraged bankers to set up illegal unauthorized accounts meet sales goals.
Given this, Proctor said the state and county can't depend on the bank to handle citizens' money.
"To knowingly allow for and to put money into a gangsta bank that you know is ripping off the public would be wrong on our part and irresponsible," said Proctor.
He has written letters to city and county commissions, Leon County schools, and the state's chief financial officer, urging them to find another place to handle finances.
"We need to do banking with those banks that are honest and preferable those banks that are local and that are helping our community and our families to strive and to meet their obligations," said Proctor.
As of now, no decision has been made about switching banks at either the county or state level, but at least one other state has distanced itself from Wells Fargo.
