Council ousts DeBary mayor over city charter violations

Posted

DEBARY, Fla. (AP) - Councilmembers in a small, central Florida city voted to oust their mayor after finding him guilty of eight counts of violating the city's charter.

The 4-0 vote to boot Clint Johnson came late Wednesday in DeBary, which is north of Orlando.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/2bIfLJX ) reports Vice Mayor Lita Handy-Peters will serve as interim mayor until the city holds a special election.

Johnson told the newspaper after the meeting that he may run for re-election. He also called charges against him frivolous "with no grounds whatsoever."

The mayor was accused of directing city staff and calling for the firing of certain employees.

A special election hasn't yet been set.
