TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The Southwood Community Development District is asking local officials for permission to have private security patrol the area.
Currently the Southwood CDD has hired a private company to patrol the area after a rash of car burglaries in the area. However, in order to keep the patrols they need city and county officials approval.
The security officers would be unarmed and the Southwood CDD would pay for all of the cost associated with the program, according to an agenda line item for the City of Tallahassee.
According to the proposed resolution, the district is asking the city and county to “consent to the exercise by the District of additional powers to finance, fund, plan, establish, acquire, construct, reconstruct, enlarge or extend, equip, operate, and maintain systems and facilities for private, unarmed security patrols.”
These private security patrols would not be able to exercise any “police power” states the resolution.
Parts of the Southwood neighborhood is also in the county, so Leon County Commissioners are set to talk about the proposal Tuesday afternoon. The City of Tallahassee is expected to take up the matter on Wednesday.
