TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The meaning of Valentine's Day has remained rather consistent over the years. What hasn't? According to Family Therapist Jane Marks, it's the way kids celebrate it.
"Now it can be cookies, candy, it can be an experience, it cane be 'come to my house for a party'," says Marks. "Valentines is a much bigger celebration."
So what are some fun, thoughtful gifts? For those of you in elementary school, it's all about the cards with candy that you give out to every one in your class. But what about older kids? What do you give your crush?
"Say middle school, you will see things like tokens of flowers, I've seen pictures, I've seen kids write poetry even to this day," explains Marks. "I've seen them say, 'can we go to a dog park together'. I've seen creative experiences like playlists."
Creative ways of saying, you are special to me.
"As you move into high school, it gets bigger, like big teddy bears or chocolates and dinner," says Marks. "I'm going to cook for him or I'm going to do something spectacular, put rose petals on her car seat."
But if you are still having trouble deciding, there is one fool-proof gift, no matter your age.
"Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate," suggests Marks. "Research has been done about it being feel good and raising endorphins, so chocolate is the key to Valentine's Day."
