CRAWFORDVILLE, FL (WTXL) -- Kids in Crawfordville were grilling up a storm at the Back to School BBQ Competition Saturday.

It was all about teaching children the importance of healthy eating and cooking.

They also learned about fire and grill safety, before the kids tested out some grill skills themselves. The meals were judged based on appearance and taste.

Regardless of the score the kids got, they were having a blast and learning new things.

"I've learned the proper way to cook a steak and how to be professional with it, especially the carrots and the sweet potatoes," said Madden Metcalf, one of the kids who participated in the cooking competition.

The event was part of a food preparation series by Wakulla 4-H. In addition to Cooking and Grilling Camps, local kids can harvest and prepare fruits and vegetables in Garden Camp.
