LAKE PARK, Ga. (WTXL)--After deputies receive reports of suspicious activity in an area of Lake Park, a convicted felon is arrested for having a gun.
Detectives with the special operations division of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office met with 30-year old Danarelle Benton, of Colquitt, at a location on Timber Drive Wednesday.
Deputies say the detectives smelled burnt marijuana coming from a room.
Benton gave them permission to search. They found a small amount of marijuana but also a nine millimeter hand gun, along with its magazine and a screw on barrel extension.
Detectives say the gun had been altered and was fully automatic allowing it to fire as long as the trigger is held.
Benton was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm, and possession of an automatic firearm.
He will appear in magistrate court Thursday afternoon where a bond will be considered.
The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to make sure it hasn't been used in other crimes.
Sheriff Prine wants to thank the residents who took time to report what they believed to be suspicious. He says their actions clearly led to the arrest of Benton and this firearm being removed from the streets.
