WASHINGTON, D.C. (RNN) – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission filed a complaint seeking to stop Britax Child Safety, Inc. from selling models of strollers that have allegedly caused serious injuries to children and adults.
According to court documents, there are reports of children suffering concussions, dental injuries, and injuries to the head and face that required stitches as a result of using the some models of the B.O.B. jogging strollers. Adults have reported fractured bones and torn ligaments.
The Commission filed the complaint after Britax declined to recall or repair the strollers.
"CPSC staff seeks a finding that the strollers present a substantial product hazard and an order that Britax provide the remedies outlined in the complaint to stop further incidents and injuries to the public," said a CPSC spokesperson in a statement.
The complaint states that an injury can occur when the quick release fails to secure the front wheel to the fork, resulting in sudden detachment during use.
When the front wheel of the stroller detaches, the front fork can dig into the ground, causing the stroller to stop abruptly and tip over.
Britax imported and distributed about 493,000 B.O.B. jogging strollers from December 2011 through September 2015. There are 17 models that may be affected.
The CPSC said that approximately 200 consumers have reported front wheel detachments while using the stroller, resulting in at least 97 injuries to children and adults, since 2012.
