TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Last year, we told you about plans for a recreation space at a Tallahassee school for students with intellectual disabilities

Now, construction is finally underway.

Crews have been working on Owl Landing at Gretchen Everhart School since last week. The school serves students ages 3 to 22 from Leon and the surrounding counties.

The play area will include wheelchair-accessible swings, enabling gardens, and sensory tables. Everhart's principal said the school has been working on this concept for years.

"We struggled in having spaces for our older students to be able to hang out with friends," said Jane Floyd Bullen, the principal at Gretchen Everhart School. "In fact, we used to call it 'The Hangout' area when we were first thinking about the plans, but it'll be a very appropriate place where older individuals with special needs will be able to enjoy time together and enjoy doing activities that we all enjoy."

The Everhart Excellence Foundation and the community raised about $250,000 for the project. Owl Landing is expected to be ready in mid-September.
