Community learns ways to reduce waste in Thomas County

Posted

THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Close to 500 tons of waste goes to the Thomas County landfill each day.

That weight equals almost 245 Ford F-150 trucks.

The Weston YMCA in Thomasville went to that landfill to learn ways to reduce the amount of waste people produce.

"I'm hoping the kids, today, will learn more after seeing all the stuff that's here at the landfill and why it's important to reuse, reduce and recycle," Juliee Murphree, Executive Director of Keep Thomas County Beautiful.

The Public Works Director of Solid Waste says 70 to 80 percent of the waste in the landfill could have potentially been recycled.

He asks residents to be mindful of how much waste they produce each day.
