TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Comedian Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the upcoming Academy Awards, after social media posts resurfaced.

And in Tallahassee, there's been public outcry all week over an Instagram post by a student senate member at Florida State University.

The bad news is if there's a mistake you'd like to erase from social media that post is out there.

But one media strategist said that doesn't have to be the end of the story.

For Tallahassee business owner Matt Farrar, social media is one of the first places he looks when vetting prospective employees.

While social media isn't the only source of information, it can give Farrar a good idea.

"I want to look at someone's overall profile and get a sense of what they are about as a person. If what they are about is partying all of the time, that's fine, I just need to know what up front before making a decision or consideration for them," said Farrar, Co-founder of Strategic Digital Services.

If you haven't put any thought into cleaning up your social media its not to late to start. One local social media expert says taking proactive steps to put your account on private and thinking about the new image you want to give off online is a good place to start.

"If you particularly have a bad image right now, maybe a few posts of your social media that have come back to bite you, or it's been harmful to you to get other opportunities, take that as a learning opportunity, it's a lesson learned. From that moment, go through and clean things up," said President of Gomes Media Strategies Trimmel Gomes.

Gomes is a marketing expert who specializes in media outreach. He said if you haven't started the cleanup process, it's important to not put this off.

"Social media and what we do with social media is like our new handshake. This is how we introduce ourselves to other people," said Gomes.
