Coke Day celebrates the fizzy drink's creation

(RNN) - For some people, every day is "have a Coke day," but it's only official on May 8.

National Have a Coke Day was created because May 8 was day the drink was first introduced in 1886, and it's also a good marketing ploy for the Coca-Cola Company. The originator is unknown, but it was undoubtedly someone of true genius who recognized the importance of John Pemberton's sweet, fizzy masterpiece.

It was originally marketed as a health drink, and contained trace amounts of cocaine. Today, it contains a significant amount of sugar, but that's actually part of why we drink it.

Coca-Cola's sales are in a slump right now, but did get quite a boost from President Donald Trump when it was reported he installed a "Coke button" on his desk in the Oval Office.

Every office should have one.

Sadly, Pemberton died before Coke became popular enough to be discussed in news reports from the White House.

On a related note, World Smile Day is Oct. 6.

This is also National Pet Week, but don’t give a Coke to your pet.
