MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A recently discovered Civil War trench will be preserved as the centerpiece of a park in a planned senior residential community in Marietta.
The Marietta Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/1Kzqr8q ) reports the 76-home development is planned to be built on a 21.6-acre tract in Cobb County. The project's builder hired an archaeological firm to study the property and found the trench, which historians say was dug in 1864 by the Confederates as a defense against Union troops.
An attorney representing the project says the trench, which mostly looks like a ditch, also has several spots with stone wall support. The builders plant to protect about 700 feet of the structure
Once construction is completed, it will be protected by a split-rail fence and new signs will inform people of its historic value.
