City ordinance unlikely for medical marijuana

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee city commissioners are meeting to go over several issues including medical marijuana.

The city imposed a moratorium in January on accepting applications for new dispensaries, to give officials more time to come up with regulations.

The final public hearing will start in an hour but the commission most likely will not adopt any ordinance. That's because Governor Rick Scott signed legislation last week that applies statewide.

The new state law covers several standards for dispensaries, including location, security, advertising and protection for employers, among other factors.

City officials saying they'd be adopting the same guidelines and there's no need to have a city-specific ordinance now.

The Department of Health is now responsible for implementing the new law, which covers ten qualifying medical conditions. That includes cancer, PTSD, epilepsy and Parkinson's disease, to name a few.
