TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--The Tallahassee Police Department releases the name of the man killed in an accident earlier this week.

Police say 46-year-old John Summers was hit by a city garbage truck, driven by 41-year old Elijah Mays, on Wednesday morning.

Summers was hit by the truck while crossing West Tennessee Street around 3:10 a.m. He died at the scene.

The City of Tallahassee says thoughts and prayers are going out to the friends and family of the pedestrian. A spokesperson says no charges have been filed, and that the driver and the city's solid waste department are continuing to cooperate with investigation.

The city says the driver’s record did not show any at-fault accidents involving pedestrians.

The city's communication department tells us the truck drivers are licensed by the state and must have at least 360 hours of training before their first service route.

Once they're on the job, they continue safety training.

The city says it's taking the accident very seriously and once all the details are collected, any needed improvements will be made.
