QUINCY, FL (WTXL) -- There are no sidewalks to walk on Adams Street south of downtown Quincy. So friends and neighbors who want to walk have to do so on the road or very close to ditches a few feet from the pavement, which is causing some safety concerns for local residents and city officials.

"We've had people complaining for a long time having to walk the streets and for safety reasons", said Quincy mayor Derrick Elias. There have been near collisions and people almost being run over. So there is a lot of positive feedback and they're glad to know that they'll be able to walk safely to and from this area."

The mayor said that the Florida Department of Transportation's "Safe Routes to School" program will help keep families and children off the road and on sidewalks.

"To lower the hazard area for the people who walk this area from downtown Quincy to Tanyard Creek park. We have a lot of schools in this area. But the streets are so narrow, we found that people are walking the streets", said Elias.

"We're just so proud to know that we're on the list, that this is going to take place, and the citizens have something to look forward to, and it will alleviate that problem in the future."
