TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)  -The city of Tallahassee is expanding its commitment to long-term environmental sustainability.

The city commission unanimously voted to join the Sustainable Tallahassee Capital Area Sustainability Compact.

The goal is to continue efforts to reduce the community's dependence on fossil fuels, and improve local air quality.

Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey said the city has been a state leader in solar production, implementing electric buses and lowering the city's electric utility emissions.

"Kyoto protocol, the Paris Accord, the city has far exceeded those standards as a municipality, which we're very proud of. If you look at some of the other examples, whether it's our solar farms and out intentions to expand them, the fact that the Florida State bus system is going to be the first all electric bus system in the state of Florida for a university," said Mayor Dailey.

Dailey also said at the February 20 commission meeting, the board will consider a draft and lay out milestones toward the goal of lessening the city's carbon footprint.
