TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee City Commission is now hearing about a controversial rezoning proposal.

Residents in one Southside neighborhood are pushing back on plans to expand a nearby sand-mining operation.

They say it's time the city puts a stop to a plan that would allow a neighboring contractor to continue operating just yards from their homes.

Residents say the sounds and dust coming from the sand pit have been unbearable. Some say their homes have literally rattled from the vibrations coming from the rock-crushing machines.

WTXL talked to one homeowner who lives just 50 feet from the sand pit, where a large mound of rubble and debris has piled up.

He said the plans to rezone and change the land use will directly impact him.

"The Leon County landfill -- the original landfill -- is set for removal,: said Sean Egan, a Woodhaven Subdivision resident. "They're going to dig literally under an old trash pile. On one side of it is Lake Munson and Munson Slew, which they're trying to clean up, and on this side is us."

We're still waiting to hear back from "Sandco, Inc." which owns that property, more than 70 acres off Capital Circle Southwest.

The local planning commission denied Sandco's proposal earlier this year. The city commission has the final say Wednesday night with a public hearing that starts at 6 p.m.
